Life Coach in the Hot Seat: Life Advice for my Children

Full disclosure.
I have had the chance to try my hand at parenting twice.

Once as a 20 year old and once as a 37 year old.
Clearly the 37 year old has figured some things out – thank God.

The 20 year old had no family support and was truly a baby when she was getting started though she did not realize it.  I could almost change this question and write a letter to that 20 year old mother.

Here are some thoughts that I feel like have held the test of time in both settings:

1.       God extends a ton of mercy and grace in the areas where you have made mistakes with your kids.  I can see that I was trying to figure out how to be a grown up at the same time as trying to be a mother and man oh man.  I just feel like I am better at this things now.  I don’t take it personally when my child gets angry and says she doesn’t like me.  I have a vision for my children’s future and part of my job as a parent is to teach them about good and bad influences in the world in the areas of people and places and circumstance they do not need to get mixed up in.

2.       God helps you to raise your children.  When I had no idea how to handle a situation the bible was very helpful for teaching me how to love to be patient to be kind in the midst of terrible twos and tweens and teens and even as a grow into adulthood (though I will admit this stage if even harder because you are watching how all that mothering plays out).

3.        Apologize for the mistake you have made, are making and continue to make but DO NOT become a doormat to your child’s out of line behaviors or attitude toward you.  There is a reason why love is sometimes tough

4.       Discipline and boundaries = love just like hugs and kisses do

What are some of your time tested truths from parenthood?

Life Coach in the Hot Seat: How I Manage My Time

How do I manage my time and structure my day?

I usually wake up about 430am.  Without an alarm.  I quietly brush my teeth and wash my face and let the first thoughts come.  Usually it is a to do list.  I walk down my stairs to the kitchen and I make a cup of coffee.  I try my best to remain in the silence… drink it in.  I try to move about with minimal light.

I walk to the living room and sit on my couch and I will pick up my Bible and a prayer devotion I am working.

I have a hard time coming up with the words to pray
so I will either pray along with the Psalms or I will help a book like “Power of a Praying Wife” guide my prayer time.  I read a chapter from the Bible – right now I am in the Book of Matthew.  I am using a bible from the Voice project that has comments from Jewish scholars that help me to read the bible not like a 21 century self centered reader but closer to how it was meant to be read – sometimes it works and I get the purity of life as not all about ME.

I will look at email and check Facebook to check out what my friends and family are up to.  The alarm goes off upstairs, first for my husband, then for my daughter.  I unplug and prepare breakfast and lunches and talk with each of them trying my hardest not to feel rushed.

Then the rush is on
Drop off at school
Rush to work
Go go go with the Primary Classroom I work in at a local Montessori school
After school program
Pick up my daughter
Head home
Dinner and an episode of “Cake Boss” or “The Middle” with family
Gym (sometimes)
Wind down
Homework
Bedtime for my daughter
Then something for the business – either creating or marketing or both

I have learned over the years with my business to try to keep it
as clean and clear as possible.

For me tweeting and facebooking and networking online all hours of the day and night does not work for me and does not honor what I teach.

I want to be in the moment.

If I am with you having coffee, I am not checking my phone and if I am I will let you know upfront that I will need to.  If I am on the phone I am not multitasking – which means I will not pick up the phone if I am in the middle of something.  If I am at work with my employer she does not need to tell me to put my phone away.  These choices (yep there are CHOICES and maybe not for everyone) keep me aligned with the person I choose to be and I present to the world.

What about you?
What does your day look like?
Are there some routines that need to be tweaked or revamped?  Post your link below if you are a blogger and I will be sure to come by.

Excerpt from Savor Your Life: Is is Time to Let it Go?

handmade BASIL spice jar

The Realization that Maybe It's Time to Let Go

Every journey starts with a separation, a leave-taking, a realization that the place you are right now is a place where you can no longer stay.
-
Justine Musk

The choice to part ways with a bad idea, a wrong decision, a friendship or a relationship is difficult to say the least.

Many people ascribe to the cliché when someone makes her bed, she needs to lie in it - no matter how uncomfortable the bed has become.  And in some cases the decision to stay in the situation can potentially bring deep lessons that have far reaching value.

But...
Is there any decision that you are facing right now where you know you need to make peace and let go?

Joy Prayers: What Does the World Need From Me?

Light in a messenger's eyes brings joy to the heart, and good news gives health to the bones.
– Proverbs 15:30

God I believe you have put something within me that the world needs.  You have given me an idea, a song, a mission, a talent
that I have been afraid to let others really see.

There have been times where I shared my vision with someone
and she was unkind with her response.
I release that person from the responsibility
of holding me back any longer.

I pray that you would surround me
with one or with many
that will nurture what you have placed inside me.
I pray you would expand my capacity to reach others in a unique way that you have crafted for me.

I start with you Lord and ask you to help me water the work.

Then I ask that you will open the eyes of those around me
who need what you have given me to offer.
You Lord know how you have given me this work to do
and for whom the work is for.

Thank you for loving me this much
to give me work to do for your good purpose
not only to connect with the world and remind them of you Lord
but to bless me with the ability to create fulfilling life work

Laura Gaffke: I Find Beauty in this Moment

Savoring life to me means living with deep appreciation, love and respect for the many gifts I have been given. Making the time to journal is one of the ways I reflect, savor and appreciate the simple treasures which add so much meaning to my life. A few things I am currently savoring...

I savor leisurely mornings, gently nudged awake by only the sunshine peeking through my window or a morning when I don’t particularly want to get up and my husband surprises me with a hot cup of coffee in my favorite turquoise flowered mug. I savor the grinning, magenta tipped rose sitting on my bedside table, feverishly yelling “hello, come draw me” and taking the time to do it. I savor time to myself and seeing someone smile, especially if I helped put it there. I savor my silly little kittens who are always in the moment and quick to forget the past. They remind me to pause, play and be present to someone other than myself.

I savor my deep, generous friendship with my confidant & business partner Tina Hirsig. She has enriched and forever changed my life through her perspective and her “being” in the world. I savor all that I have learned from her about acceptance, following your dreams, staying the course and riding the waves. I savor relationships, my family, understanding and people who help me be a better person and live with an open heart. All of these magnificent gifts make my life rich with meaning and full of love.

With gratitude,
Laura

Bio
Laura Gaffke had the pleasure of growing up in New Hampshire where she was fortunate to have the mountains, city and seacoast all within close reach. Her diverse surroundings imprinted a deep connection with nature and compassion for the environment. It also invoked a desire to explore such places as England, Norway, Paris and the whispered magic of the Amalfi Coast. She believes happiness is a state of mind that can travel with you anywhere. Her vibrant use of color reflects this positive attitude and the joy she seeks both within and the world around her. Laura finds inspiration and meaning in tranquil mornings alone with her journal, in the hushed beauty of a freshly picked iris, engaged in rich conversation with friends and on peaceful beach walks which quiet her busy mind, giving form to new ideas.

Joy Prayers: The Times When I Wanted to Give Up

Those who go out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with them.
Psalm 126:6

God
you have given me seeds to sow in the Earth
through
my talents,
my time,
my energy.

I have tried to be faithful
with the work
you have given me to do.

There are times that I have wanted to give up Lord
but
you were faithful to keep the vision alive within me.

There are times
when I ignored the vision,
so tired of waiting for the work that was planted
to produce a harvest.

I have become
bitter,
envious,
angry
yes to the point of tears sometimes,
yes to the point of wanting to give up.

And yet you were still there Lord
wiping my tears,
helping to carry the seed to sow.

I pray Lord
for the returning of the harvest,
for the seeds sown
to break out into bountiful sheaves
too numerous for me to count.

I pray God
knowing that what the seeds are producing now
is EXACTLY
what you have planned for it to produce.

Renew my patience
as I trust that your timing is perfect.

And your provision is always
more than I can ask or think.
